Movie Mondays: Love Stories Gone Awry, From Heartbreaking to Hilarious

When love takes a bizarre turn, someone inevitably makes a movie about it.

Last week was all about the best declarations of love in movies. But sometimes, love is not all about the grand gesture and and butterflies in the stomach. Sometimes, it goes hopelessly or hilariously awry.

Here are this week's three picks for love stories gone loco. As always, the movie trailers are attached to the article.

"Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind"

Clementine, played by Kate Winslet, wanted nothing more than to erase all memories of her relationship with Joel, played by Jim Carrey.

So she opted to undergo a procedure that erased those memories from her brain. Joel finds out what she did and decides that's the best way he can get over Clementine.

But mid-procedure, as his memories of Clementine start to fade, he changes his mind. This movie, a mix of sci-fi, drama and romance, is really about the eternal question: Can the past ever be found again?

"The Way We Were"

Katie and Hubbell have a tumultuous relationship that doesn't seem to fit quite right, all throughout its history.

Katie is played by Barbra Streisand, while Robert Redford plays her love, Hubbell. This movie is about a pair of people who just can't work it out. No matter how much time has passed, they can't forget the way they were.

"A Midsummer Night's Dream"

This 1999 movie based on the Shakespeare play can be summed up with this awful rhyme filled with bad English: "I love you, you love she, she loves he and here we be."

"A Midsummer Night's Dream" is all about complicated love, when someone loves another who doesn't love them back. Lysander and Demetrius favor Hermia but Hermia loves Lysander. Helena loves Demetrius, and Hermia's father wants Hermia to marry Demetrius.

Got all that?

If it wasn't complicated enough, fairies decide to get involved and chaos ensues. As Lysander aptly notes in the movie: "The course of true love never did run smooth."

In this film, the mistakes people make on the path of love are delightful rather than depressing. It reminds me of another title by Shakespeare - "All's Well That Ends Well."
