Crime Rate in Conn., U.S. at a 40-Year Low
The reason for the decline is a bit of a mystery to government officials, according to the Housatonic Times.
The Office of Policy and Management announced last week that crime in Connecticut, as well as the U.S., is at a 40-year low, according to the Housatonic Times.
Michael Lawlor, undersecretary for the OPM’s Criminal Justice Planning and Policy Division, who presented the report to the legislature's Judiciary Committee on Friday, said that it's unclear why crime rates in the country are on the decline, but it could be attributed to a number of factors, including the increased use of cell phone cameras.
In 2011, the number of arrests in Connecticut decreased by 11.4 percent compared to the three previous years. The number of repeat offenses has also dropped by 5 percent since 2007. Lawlor also announced that prison rates are steadily dropping with 700 fewer prisoners incarcerated in January 2012 compared to January 2011.
In Fairfield County, specifically, Stamford and Danbury made the list of the top 100 safest cities in the country, according to CQ Press's City Crime Rankings 2011-2012: Crime in Metropolitan America, an annual ranking of cities with populations over 75,000.

Crime rates are generally down across the nation. Often stories like this use massaged statistics to make a town, city or state seem better than it is. The FBI, Census Bureau and other federal agencies use diverse methodologies to define crime, and often crimes are sequestered into many diverse categories. If we pick a category we like, it's always possible to find some crime somewhere that is "good news".

That's ridiculous, Bob. Law agencies want their budgets INCREASED, not decreased. Inflating statistics is how to get it done.

My source is common sense, it’s a fact when the economy is at its lowest then crime is at its highest.
How crime is reported is a different issue.
If this article stated that crime was at its highest, what would your reaction be?

"it’s a fact when the economy is at its lowest then crime is at its highest."
Not always true. The national crime rate started dropping dramatically in the late 80's/early 90's...and continued to drop, and no one was able to chart why.
The Donohue-Levitt Theory, which was published in 2001 claimed that Roe Vs Wade was responsible.

Crime is low perhaps because when its reported to the "Danbury PD" is not investigated such as it happened to us. In January, a person (allegedly from Comcast) walked the neighborhood asking weird questions, then that same night one of our cars broken into while parked insided a fenced in property and stole all the electronics from the vehicle. While all this was caught on surveillance, here a month later, the Danbury police HAS NOT made any intentions on reviewing the video. If crime is not investigated, it's not logged in, therefore unaccounted for.

We called the police and filed a complaint on both the day after, that January 19, 2012. I also put together the surveillance information to bring down to the officer, however, "this is the funny part" he told me he would rather come see it at my house because their computers might not be able to play the video correctly. ARE YOU SERIOUS????? With a new, state of the art police headquarter and they don't have "CSI" type of modern electronics for him to view this video? I think they do! I just think they rather cover the "citizen" reported crimes and only file their own incidents this way Danbury can continue receiving any aid for been a safe city and also Danbury can continue ranking high as one of the safest places to live. The mayor has gotten involved in our issue, lets see what will he do or else, I will be forced to call either CT news 3, 6, or 8 for exposure!

Christopher,
Because of the ever increasing crime rate in Brookfield, the town is hiring even more police this year in an effort to stem crime and the depressing effects crime is having on home values and retail - where folks are afraid to shop at times. Check the budget they just submitted. They'll spin it another way, but the facts are the facts. And you;'ll be taking your life in your hands on the Long Meadow Hill Speedway and dragstrip at certain times of the day. It's out of control and the lack of enforcement and detective work is readily apparent to thieves, thugs and hoodlums.

It's part of the Davidson-Lasser Jobs Act to lower unemployment?
The crime rate has fallen? That's what happens when people change the ruler to fit the measurement.
Home values are depressed due to the enormous real estate tax load and their effect on mortgage affordablity on home buyers and the deflation occuring from years of over inflation in terms of real estate prices in Brookfield.

In case you've never heard this tape, Its of Joe Horn, A regular blue collar guy who witnessed his neighbors being robbed, he called 911 and was on the phone with the operator while these two were robbibg the home. Finally, the two robbers came outof the house and Joe ran out with his shot gun and shot both of them. it was almost 8 minutes before the police showed up, in all honesty, they most likly would have caught these two just as they were getting away but now, one is in the morgue and I believe the other one was wounded as he ran away. And Joe Horn, although his life was turned upside down, is a free man and hero to alot of folks. He took a stand and helped rid the world of at least two scumbags! The only, ONLY problem I have withthis is if he accidentally hit some innocent by stander or kid.. besides that, I applaud him

"G" is 100% correct. Police departments and national criminal justice agencies use "massaged statistics" to either justify asking for more money/man power, or to make areas look more safe than they are. Craig in one of my classes we discussed that very same case. My issue is, the reason more crime gets shoved under the table is because many people see thngs, however, they are either too busy with their own hectic life's and might consider it insignificant to call the police or they are afraid to get involved. In this case you mentioned, I think Mr. Horn perhaps reacted a bit too soon, though, I give him credit for sticking up and risking his own life, to defend the neighbor's property. Your case also reminds me of the teenager somewhere in the west, home alone with her newborn and two thugs trying to break her door down. She shot'em both I believe. It's sad it's come down to hearing about these type of situations more often than ever. The worst part is knowing these criminals have no worries about what might be expecting them inside, it's almost as if they are blinded by whatever purpose brought them to that situation, which probably they are.

This is Connecticut, people dont get involved in fear of being sued. Plus we have to drive to shooting range while people in other states are allowed to do some practice on their backyard. IN Southbury with all those liberals there would be SWAT team storming place in like 5 minutes if you try to shoot some targets on your property.
Craig Zac

Yeah that young mother and her kid, she shot and killed one guy and the other one i believe, turned himself in. I also think it was just after christmas and her husband died like, on christmas day or something. She was a major news story and I think it finally drove home the point of you should be able to protect yourself and property with deadly force if you have too. Like, if you shot someone after the fact, while they were running away or the next day at the bar, no.. but if your home alone and these two guys are breaking in, hell yeah, shoot first, ask questions later. And dont we also have the Castle Law here in CT.?
Southbury Resident

Craig to use weapon correctly requires some training, if people can not target practice on the back of their property then they have to drive to shooting range and spend a lot of money. I am pretty sure Southbury does not allow backyard target practice but I could be wrong. Anybody familiar with law in Southbury can chime in.

Id be willing to bet property size has alot to do with it. My house abuts both of my neighbors lands so I have at least 60 acres to shoot on although I havent yet tried.. im not sure of Oxford laws, I may get in trouble.. Im sure if / when I ask them, ill have their permission. I shouldlook into it. Right now im looking hard at the Tarus Judge, the S&W Governor and the Bond Arms Snake Slayer... nothing like a hand held shot gun for personal protection.

I think Oxford allows target shooting since I keep hearing people doing target shooting all the time. I dont think acreage has anything to do with it since all other places only require 8 foot background that stops the bullets. With out background bullets can travel long distance so I would think that's always required. Again not sure about Southbury. MY neighbor in NH has nice setup on his 0.5 acre although I told him he is free to use my property this way my place there gets protection and he has more elbow room. I dont own any guns but he did let me do some shooting and it was fun. So once I move there I will get something.

Its naive and a sign of limited knowledge to infer trends or reality from anecdotal events. These criminals are not running any more wild than they ever have -you're just hearing about it 24/7. Just because it makes sense based on your limited experience does not make it a generalizable fact. This is an error that is made too often these days by people who don't, can't or won't think. If you think the issue is simple-most likely you are.

Southbury Resident, I think your correct, people dont want to get involved for either fer of retalliation or because they just dont wanna be involved... or sued, with all the horror stories you hear of good samaritons either getting hurt, killed or sued, who'd want to get involved? As for shooting, Im not sure of the laws here in Oxford when it pertains to shooting on your own property but Im guessing you need alot or a good amount of acres to do so. oneof my neighbors, in fact two of them both have 30-some odd acres and shoot all the time. My NRA instructor has a range in his yard and another in his basement. Although he did mention if he does too much shooting in the yard his neighbors will call the cops, I dont think they can do anything except ask him to stop. Im not sure though. I know a few times the cops went to my neighbors house while he was shooting, only because some guy on the other side of him called cause it was spooking his horses.
