Crafty Tuesday: DIY Doily Lamps

This shabby chic craft will have you seeing the light.

During a long New England winter, sometimes we have to remember to surround ourselves with light so we don't get the winter blues.

We've been pretty lucky recently with warmer weather, but when the sun goes down, the room will be so much warmer if you turn on this light - instructions courtesy of the Dos Family blog. Please click on the link to the blog to see photographs of the craft.

  1. Paint the doilies or tablecloths with wallpaper glue until they are soaked.
  2. Blow up the balloon.
  3. Hang the balloon a string and place the soaked doilies on the balloon. They must overlap each other so they stick together and connect.
  4. Once all the doilies are on the balloon, put on another coat of glue.
  5. Allow the glue to dry for 24 hours.
  6. Pop the balloon once the glue is dry.
  7. Cut open a little section on top to fit the cord and lamp fitting.
  8. The cut open section can be sewed later.

 Things to note:

  • Fire safety: The Dos family blog recommends making the ball large enough so it doesn't come close to the bulb. It also recommends using an energy saving bulb or LED lamp because their temperature is colder than a regular bulb.
  • Tips and tricks are noted by readers of the blog, in the comment section. Be sure to read them before trying this craft, as some folks shared their tips that they felt worked better for them.
